Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Level Discussions on Reiki Practice, Reiki Training, Reiki Tips & Techniques, Reiki History and anything else related to this wonderful and awe inspiring healing modality and path to Spiritual Enlightenment.
Hi! I’m Duane Flowers and I’d like to warmly welcome you to Reiki - What It All Be Like (or reiki.whatitallbelike.com in Internetese) which has turned out to be much more than the Reiki blog it was originally intended to be. I guess my Reiki guides had something else in mind when they directed me towards the creation of these pages and they are with me every day as I bring whatever I can into the light and share with you my love of Reiki and everything related to it.
What is Reiki?
Traditionally Reiki was developed as a Buddhist path to spiritual enlightenment, however in recent years it has grown increasingly popular as a form of hand healing or energy healing which is one of the unique and unusual side effects of this wonderful practice know as Reiki. Surprisingly, Reiki is not as popular in Japan (the place where it comes from) as it is in most Western Nations, however, in recent years Japan has begun to wake up to this amazing (and amazingly simple) healing modality and spiritual practice.
Countless cultures throughout the centuries have identified a form of energy emanating from the human body, yet not of it. The Chinese call this mysterious energy Chi or Qi. In India, the Sanskrit word for it is Prana. Hawaiians and other Polynesian cultures refer to this energy as Mana. It is known as Ruach in Hebrew and Baraka in Islamic Countries. But there remains no English equivalent for this spiritual life force energy that forms the basis of Reiki healing.
Dr. Wilhelm Reich conducted experiments with this energy and referred to it as Orgone Energy, while Russian researchers have identified it as Bio-Plasmic Energy. What exactly is this mysterious, ethereal energy that seems to circulate through our bodies and can be called upon at will to break through physical, mental and emotional blocks to restore health to those damaged areas? No one seems to really know for sure, but Quantum Physicists have been making tremendous headway towards understanding it and hopefully, someday soon, they will be able to explain it and how Reiki works.
In much the same way that martial artists and yogis have been making use of this energy for ages and have developed the ability to direct it merely through their thoughts, Reiki is a distant cousin of these disciplines. After receiving a Reiki attunement, or connection to the Reiki energies, from a qualified Reiki Master, a Reiki Practitioner is then able to hold his or her hands over an affected area, and the vibrational qualities of the Reiki energy cause the affected area to vibrate at a higher, more healing rate and thus Reiki healing is accomplished. There are no difficult exercises to practice, nothing to do or remember, just connect to the Reiki energy and let Reiki do the rest.
Anyone can do Reiki, in fact I’ve never heard of anyone not being able to do it. This site and these pages contain discussions of various aspects of Reiki with beginner, intermediate and advanced Reiki Practitioners in mind. I am a Reiki Master who has been living in Japan for over 12 years where I have been learning as much as I can about Reiki, right from the Reiki homeland. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to study Reiki on an ongoing basis with some of Japan?s greatest Reiki Masters and would like to share all I am able to about Reiki History, Reiki Practice, Reiki Techniques, Reiki Theory, and Reiki Training… especially with Reiki practitioners in the West who do not have access to such a direct line of communication and information.
A quick word about orientation. To the far right are about and contact pages to give you more details about who I am and a quick way to get in touch with me. Also, to the right are the archives of everything to date… miscellaneous pages, Reiki Book Reviews, links to some of my favorite Reiki sites some assorted ads to offset server costs, and of course much much more is on the way, so feel free to come back as often as you like, or click the RSS feed icon at the top of the page and sign up for automatic notices whenever something new is added… you can always cancel the RSS feed at any time if it gets to be too much.
This site is dedicated to all the Reiki Practitioners out there who don’t have a place to talk about Reiki, all the Reiki Practitioners out there who do have a place to talk about Reiki (and now have another) and anyone else who wants to learn and talk about everything related to Reiki. Thanks for visiting and don’t hesitate to use the contact page with any and all questions, comments or suggestions that you would rather not publicly post. Namaste and I’m looking forward to seeing you all inside.
Please keep in touch…

Who attuned Dr. Usui?
Many people wonder that since you need an attunement to be able to do Reiki, how is it that Dr. Usui was able to do Reiki? Who was it that attuned Dr. Usui in the first place to allow him to be able to channel and pass on the Reiki energies? And to be perfectly honest…
Reiki Salad
Just as blending various essential oils in aromatherapy leads to different results, so too does blending Reiki energy with the energies of other healing modalities (or spiritual practices if you want to take things one step further. I call these…
Memories of Mt. Kurama
My first trip to Mt. Kurama, the birthplace of Reiki was, as you might imagine, a wonderful experience. The energies there are simply amazing and as a pilgrim to one of Reiki’s sacred spots simple pleasures abound. My first trip there was by car while all subsequent trips have been by train and each time…
Reiki and Green Tea
I may be stretching a bit here in search of a connection, but I do believe the question has to be asked? what is the relationship between Reiki and Green Tea? And before you ask, the answer is NO!!!? I’m not trying to write one of those sensationalized National Enquirer type stories like “Boy Eats Own Head…
The Quantum Nature of Reiki Energy
In the wonderful little book called Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin A. Abbott, (available here in its entirety) the idea that 2 dimensional people called Flatlanders are not able to understand 3 dimensional reality is presented. Imagine a 2 dimensional place, where the people are also 2 dimensional…
Why isn’t Reiki more popular in Japan?
I recently encountered an interesting discussion on one of the Reiki boards about why Reiki “did not get air under its wings in Japan as it did in the West” which you can find here and in my opinion, while many of the suggested causes were quite interesting (especially the one about the refrigerator)…

Memories of Saihoji Temple
My first visit to Saihoji Temple (the burial place of Mikao Usui) in Tokyo was, I’m sure, like that of most other Reiki pilgrims… i.e., an experience that I will cherish forever. It was about 5 years ago and I had just finished a Reiki Master Seminar with Hiroshi Doi…
Reiki Goes to the Zoo
Today was a perfect day for going to the zoo… so that’s exactly what we did! And for several of the animals that were there it was a lucky thing we did as I happened to bring a generous supply of Reiki energy with me… and I think it was a good thing too…
Did Ye Get Healed?
There is a song by Van Morrison (one of my all-time favorite artists) that is kind of my Reiki theme song and here are the lyrics for you… its found on the albums Poetic Champions Compose and The Best of Van Morrison and I recommend checking it out…
