Reiki Glossary

1. Anshin Ritsumei

The first stage of enlightenment... a state where the mind is perpetually filled with peace, tranquility and joy, aka Daianshin

2. Attunement

The transmission of Reiki energy from Master to Student opening the student's energy channels and enabling access to that Reiki energy. There are specific attunements required at different levels of Reiki and different styles of Reiki perform these attunements differently.

3. byosen

Byosen Scanning, (Byosen Reikan-ho in Japanese) is, in its simplest form, the practice of using your hands like a metal detector when doing Reiki... but instead of searching for lost treasure you are searching for energy imbalances. Once your hands become familiar with the subtle Reiki energies, you can easily detect these imbalances simply by passing your hands over someone's body.

4. Chiyoko Yamaguchi

Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921-2003) was a student of Dr. Hayashi and studied with him from 1938 to 1940. Mrs. Yamaguchi was Hyakuten Inamoto's teacher and the Komyo Reiki system that he developed is based on her teachings.

6. Dr. Peebles

James Martin Peebles, (1822-1922), author, Spiritualist, medium, leader in 19th Century Spiritualism, physician, healer and currently being channeled by several mediums and bring forward a powerful message to all who would listen.

7. Duane Flowers

Duane Flowers is an English teacher and Reiki Master who has been living in Japan since 1996. He is founder of the Reiki - What It All Be Like Website and Hana Reiki Academy and has been teaching Reiki in Japan since 2002.

8. Gakkai

Refers to the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, the society founded by Dr. Usui in 1922 for the study of Usui Reiki Ryoho.

9. Gassho

The act of putting your hands together in the prayer position connecting the left and right energy channels of our body making us, in effect, an antenna to heaven (or whatever relates to heaven in your own belief system).

11. Gendai Reiki

Gendai Reiki Ho is translated as "Modern Reiki Method" and is the traditional Japanese system of Reiki founded by Hiroshi Doi. Doi Sensei, having studied many different forms of Reiki, both Western and Japanese is also a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (the original Reiki society) and elements of all of these systems are found in Gendai Reiki training making it one of the truly unique, truly authentic and truly powerful systems of Reiki.

13. Gyosei

Gyosei are poems written by the Japanese Emperors. In Reiki this refers to the 125 Poems written by the Meiji Emperor which Dr. Usui chose to be studied and meditated upon by Reiki Ryoho students.

14. Gyoshi-ho

15. Hado Kokyu-ho

"Ha" breathing method that involves exhaling with the sound ?Haaa?. This breathing method is also used in many forms of ancient shamanism, including Hawaiian Huna.

A form of meditation using the Hado-Kokyu breathing method.

17. Haiku

18. Hana

Hana Reiki is translated as "Spiritual Flower Reiki" and is the advanced Reiki system developed by Duane Flowers drawing largely from Gendai Reiki Ho, Komyo Reiki Kai, and various Western forms of Reiki and other Energy Healing Modalities.

19. Hanshin Koketsu-ho

A Reiki technique for purifying, cleansing and detoxifying the blood of the upper half of the body.

20. Hasshodo

One of the basic teachings of the Buddha that describes eight rightful conducts, which are Shoken (right recognition), Shoshiyui (right thinking), Shogo (right words), Shogyo (right deeds), Shomyo (right occupation), Shoshoujin (right effort), Shonen (right [physical/mental] awareness), Shojyou (right concentration).

21. Hatsurei-ho

Hatsurei-ho is a form of guided meditation that effectively increases the depth, quality and intensity of ones connection to the Reiki energies.

22. Heso Chiryo-ho

A Reiki treatment centering on the navel and used for the balancing, centering and healing of yourself or others.

23. Hibiki

Negative energy emitted by a diseased or imbalanced part of the body and detectable by Reiki scanning.

24. Higher Self

The perfect, ideal "you" that is always guiding you on your journey through life; your true self, soul, great self, inner wisdom, divine self, the unspeakable answer to Nisargadatta's question of "Who Are You?"

26. Hikari no Kokyu-ho

A Reiki technique known as the light breathing method, useful for reducing stress as well as stimulating, strengthening and purifying the flow of Reiki; aka Joshin Kokyu-ho.

27. Hikkei

Refers to the Usui Reiki Ryoho Hikkei. This was Dr. Usui's Reiki Manual consisting of four parts; the ?Kyogi? (Reiki Philosophy), ?Kokai Denju Setsumei? (Q&A), ?Shishin? (Hand Positions for Common Disorders) and ?Gyosei? (Meiji Emperor's Tanka).

28. Hiroshi Doi

Hiroshi Doi is the author of "Modern Reiki Method for Healing", founder of the Gendai School of Reiki and member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (the original Reiki society founded in 1926) located in Ashiya, Japan. Having studied many different styles of Reiki as well as several other forms of energy healing in addition to being a member of "The Gakkai" puts Doi Sensei is a rather unique position to spread Reiki in a way that is not possible by others. Through his monthly Reiki Shares and regular Reiki Classes he has established himself as one of the world's most gifted and eminent Reiki Masters. Lineage: Usui - Taketomi - Koyama - Doi

Huna is a form of ancient Hawaiian Shamanism. Huna itself is a Hawaiian word adopted by Max Freedom Long (1890-1971) in 1936 to describe his theory of metaphysics based on research into what he called ?the secret science behind miracles? that ancient Hawaiian kahuna (experts) performed.

31. Hyakuten Inamoto

Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto is an independent, non-sectarian monk officially belonging to the Pure Land branch of Japanese Buddhism and is located in Kyoto, Japan. Hyakuten Sensei is the founder of the Komyo Kai School of Reiki as well as the Kyoto Healing Center where he regularly holds Japanese and International Reiki classes. Being fluent in English and Japanese, he is also responsible for numerous Reiki translations from their original Japanese. Hyakuten Sensei was trained by Mrs. Yamaguchi, a student of Dr. Hayashi and is devoted to preserving the simplicity of the traditional Japanese Reiki teachings. He emphasizes the importance of both Reiki Ryoho as a healing art and Reiki as a path to spiritual enlightenment. Lineage: Usui - Hayashi - Yamaguchi -Inamoto

32. Itako

Itako, usually referred to as blind female shamans, are the best known spirit mediums of Japan. They are renown for their capacity to speak for the dead, through a ritual process known as "kuchiyose." Many itako deploy the ritual figurines known as oshirasama in this process, and at times recite the mythic chant, the oshirasaimon.

41. Krishnamurti

Jiddu (J.) Krishnamurti, (May 12, 1895??February 17, 1986) was a well-known writer and speaker on fundamental philosophical and spiritual subjects. His subject matter included (but was not limited to): the purpose of meditation, human relationships, and how to enact positive change in global society. At the age of 34, he publicly renounced the fame and messiah status he had gained from being proclaimed the new incarnation of the Maitreya Buddha by the Theosophical Society, and spent the rest of his life publishing regularly and holding public talks, mostly in South Asia, Europe and the United States. At age 90 he addressed the United Nations on the subject of peace and awareness, and was awarded the 1984 UN Peace Medal.

42. Mawashi

A Reiki Mawashi is a "Reiki Circle" where Reiki energy is passed around the circle, clockwise and counterclockwise and participants play with the energies as well as test their abilities to perceive them.

43. Nisargadatta

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj (April 17, 1897 - September 8, 1981) was a spiritual teacher, considered by many to have attained the supreme state of liberation. Nisargadatta is widely considered to be one of the 20th century's most direct followers of the school of Advaita Vedanta as well as a world-renowned teacher admired for his direct and informal style. Nisargadatta explained that the purpose of advanced spirituality is to simply know who you are. Through his many talks given in his humble flat in the slums of Bombay, he showed a direct way in which one could become aware of one's original nature. Many of these talks were recorded, and these recordings form the basis of "I Am That" and his other books. His words are free from cultural and religious trappings, and the knowledge he expounds is stripped bare of all that is unnecessary.

44. Onmyodo

Onmyodo is a traditional Japanese esoteric system based on natural science and occultism. Onmyodo is based on the Chinese philosophies of the Five Elements and Yin and yang, and was introduced into Japan at the turn of the 6th century where it was then influenced by Taoism, Buddhism and Shintoism, and evolved into present-day Onmyodo. Practitioners of Onmyodo are called Onmyoji.

46. Ramana

Sri Ramana Maharshi (December 30, 1879 - April 14, 1950), born Venkataraman Iyer, was an Indian sage. After having attained liberation at the age of 16, he left home for Arunachala, a mountain considered sacred by Hindus, at and lived there for the rest of his life. Although born a Brahmin, after having attained liberation he declared himself an "Atiasrami", a state of unattachment to anything in life and beyond all caste restrictions. Sri Ramana maintained that the purest form of his teachings was the powerful silence which radiated from his presence and quieted the minds of those attuned to it. He gave verbal teachings only for the benefit of those who could not understand his silence. His verbal teachings were said to flow from his direct experience of Consciousness as the only existing reality. When asked for advice, he recommended self-enquiry as the fastest path to enlightenment. Amazingly, every major religious group in India agreed that Ramana Maharshi was fully enlightened.

48. Reiki

Reiki - Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system of Enlightenment and a Hands on Healing art developed in the early 1900's by Mikao Usui in Japan. It is an disciple containing an energy that is passed from Master to Student. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words - Rei and Ki, meaning Universal Life Force Energy. The term "Reiki" is used to describe both the energy and the system of using it. The original system by Dr. Usui was called "Usui Reiki Ryoho" although there are currently many different styles of Reiki being practiced today.

49. Seiki

Seiki-jutsu is a Japanese Shamanic healing system dating back to the 1600's. While more closely resembling Chinese healing modalities such as Qi Gong & Feng Shui than Reiki, there are some interesting correlations.

50. Seiza

Seiza is the traditional or formal way of sitting in Japan. To sit seiza-style, one first kneels on the floor, folding one's legs underneath one's thighs, while resting the buttocks on the heels. The tops of the feet are then lowered so that they are flat on the floor, and the buttocks are finally lowered all the way down. The hands are sometimes folded modestly in the lap and sometimes placed palm down on the upper thighs with the fingers close together. The back is kept straight, though not unnaturally stiff. Traditionally, women sit with the knees together while men separate them slightly, proportional to body size.

53. Shugendo

Shugendo is an old Japanese religion in which enlightenment is obtained through the study of the relationship between Man and Nature. Shugendo literally means "the path of training and testing." It centers on an ascetic, mountain-dwelling lifestyle and incorporates teachings from Shinto, Buddhism and other eastern philosophies including folk animism. The focus or goal of shugendo is the development of spiritual experience and power.

54. Siddhis

Magical or spiritual powers for greater control over the self, others and the forces of nature attained at the highest levels of Yogic study.

55. Tanden

The tanden is an important focal point for meditation and refers to the body's center of gravity located in the abdomen three finger widths below (and two finger widths behind) the navel.
